Finally got a strop in
Hello all,
With a new razor in I went hunting for a strop and found this at an antique store -
Not quite sure how to go about getting this ready. From what I've been told I have 4 surfaces for stropping. The smooth leather was recommended using strop conditioner. The back of the canvas maybe the chrome. What whould I do with the diamond patterned side of the leather or the opposite side of the canvas?
Thx,
Jim

Looks like you are ready to go as is! Just assure there is no dust or dirt on it.

Waffle side and similar treatments make it a "Russian." There are many patterns that were sold a "Russian" and they are caused by texturing one of the rollers which fed the raw leather into the machine which thinned it to a given thickness and made it smooth on the top. The pattern also makes a more flexible strop when thicker leather is used...the spaces are to catch excess paste, if used.

Thanked: 4827that should work just fine. At this point I would just worry about plain leather and plain linen. Oh and your technique!

With a nice antique strop like that I wouldn't use anything that can't be removed. Get some cheap leather for pasting and leave that one for stropping
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed
