Thanked: 0Beginner Strop
I just got my first straight razor for Christmas, and I am looking for a strop to buy, but there are so many options I'm kind of overwhelmed. Can any recommend a good beginner strop? Should I get one that has canvas on one side and leather on the other side?
I appreciate the help!

Thanked: 19yes the canvas adds to cleaning the blade before hitting the leather. stay away from the cheapies on amazon. buy a starter strop from whipped dog or tony miller. odds are not in you favor for the first strop lasting long before you nick or cut it. some can be fixed some cannot so don't go to the highest place in the world to buy your first one but the ebay and some amazon strops aren't worth the money. star shaving may have something, tony at the well shaved gentleman may have a practice strop, I would try him first and see if he might have something and explain to him ist your first strop, later move on up.

I think this video will answer a lot of questions. Going too cheap isn't a good idea IMO. You can start with a decent strop and although you'll nick it and scar it some it will likely remain useable. I still have and occasionally use my first strop. Also SRD strops have replacement elements. If you damage one badly, you can just order that replacement piece and not have to buy a whole new strop.
I do think a 3" strop is easier to learn on and use.

Howard

Check out the Strops at Straight Razor Designs. There well made and have replaceable leather in-case you make a bad mistake during the learning process.

for beginner: Check this here Dovo
And the same thing here with out the Dovo logo
I have the second one and it works fine... There are surely better ones but it could be good to wait until you have your technique good and proper before shelling out for an excellent strop you may very well shred to pieces.
They can do this in the same way that some cheaper razor manufacturers "assemble" their razors in Solingen and can then put the Solingen label on them...

The SRD strops work well for me. I found the roo strop good for learning because it's very supple/pliable. The English IV is also a great strop. The canvas is good for learning because you can put CrOX on one side. I dulled a lot of razors while learning, so a CrOX touch up was handy.

When i began with a razors , there were nobody to show and tell me , whats all about . So i look many videos in the web , and i read a lot from here ,info from the forum . It is all you will ever need , after that you began slowly and get some speed after .I just got my first straight razor for Christmas, and I am looking for a strop to buy, but there are so many options I'm kind of overwhelmed. Can any recommend a good beginner strop? Should I get one that has canvas on one side and leather on the other side?

Linn videos are the best educational videos out there . There is nothing scary , just act slow at the begining .
I never had a custom strop , i made them my self and they work very well , arent they a strips of a quality leather after all .
You will always nick your first strop when learning , how to strop , so buy a piece of a descent cowhide and enjoy.
After a wile you will understand what you like and what is working for you ,the best .

I got my starter strop from Alastair at Westhomle Strops. Excellent quality at a good price and well worth a look.
