I have been doing hobby leatherwork for over 20 years. The crazy thing about people who don't want to use leather is that leather is a by-product of the meat industry. It is something that would have otherwise been thrown away, until there was a market developed for it. So if this kind of thing really did catch on, the hides that are now being used for leather might end up not getting used. If I think about this stuff too much it will just make my head spin.
Vegan leathers are a very different thing, and are full synthtics. I don't think they do a great job in having similar properties to real leather.

Thanked: 3215So, how many strops can you get from a vegan, allowing for knees and elbows and such?

Thanked: 3164Adulterating their food with meat products and telling them after they have eaten it gets them fairly stroppy. Not sure how many times you could do it until you woke up in a hospital bed though, and we must remember that vegans are natural products - no two are alike, so the amount of 'strops' you could get will vary from individual to individual...

Neil

I'm thinking the draw would be quite ironic. Organic hemp might make a nice second piece.

I looked at hemp also as a back up
but with all the suppliers I could find the weave appears to be to coarse,
similar articles I have seen suggest the coarser weaves may cause damage to razor bladesSaved,

Thanked: 3227I dunno, I like traditional materials and designs but do like new materials if they perform as well as or better than traditional materials. Case in point, I doubt I will buy another badger brush as I find synthetics work just as well or better for me. If this lab grown leather worked as well as or better than natural leather for stropping why turn my nose up at it. That is unless it was in some godawful gaudy colour. I try and keep an open mind about such things.

I have three excellent leather strops (Neil Miller, Scrupleworks, Kanayama), but if there were a vegan strop that did an even better job, I would be happy to use it, just like the handful of top notch vegan soaps that I use (e.g. MdC, LPC).
