I bought a new Strop
Just as the title states, I got a new strop. Now I am new to SRS and this is the first one that I have purchased. I bought it off of Amazon (I know that is probably the worst place to get one, but it's a budget thing... right now anyway). The description stated that it was canvas and leather. The leather is genuine, but the canvas side has more of a suede/faux leather feel to it. My question is, is that what the canvas side of a strop is supposed to be like? Like I said, I am new to SRS and am asking out of ignorance. Be kind and thanks in advance for your help!

Thanked: 4826Well without a look at it it is pretty hard to say. Most of the second materials are fabric of some kind, although there are a few exceptions. I have never thought of saving money by buying a second rate item. Although I have no idea what you bought, but you did use the budget word, which is what it brings to mind. A lot of people buy inexpensive items to get them started just to test the waters. We are talking about trying to chi eve the gold standard in shaving, so i think you should get pretty good stuff to start. I never really wanted to try to shave with the cheapest gear a man could find. If you want a great shave you will have to invest a little.

A few pictures of the strop and a link to the item on amazon would be helpful.

Thanked: 4826Well it is labeled as genuine leather, it is a decent size surface for stropping on. I would think that it i worth trying out. The good news is it will not break the bank once it gets nicked up and you decide to replace it. even though it is a 3" wide strop you should still work on an X pattern which your stropping strokes. There are many that never use the fabric side. It is often used to clean and warm the edge slightly to prepare it for the leather. It's usefulness is long debated, although I have to say I use mine every time. It sometimes is about what you believe in and not what can be proven.

Is it just me or does the pic on the website look like two strips of leather. I don't see anything that looks like fabric here. The opposite side of the leather IS like a suede texture but that's normal and not a stropping surface. Both the black and the tan appear to be leather. But then again, I have a eye Dr appt set up for the weekend so take my vision for what its worth.
