Default Found a good strop compound

I was out yesterday "Running my Traps"& picked up some free sample packs of Meguiar's "Ultimate Compound". I have a cheap strop with a leather side which is ok & a strop of some kind of nylon material. I thought I would try the compound on the nylon strop. This product is in a kind of paste form & was easy to apply to the strop. I had a Wade & butcher 6/8 hollow ground that I had just finished honing on my 10,000 grit hone. So I did 10 laps on the strop with the compound & wow what a great SHARP edge & shine. Then did 50 laps on my Koken horse hide strop & I have to say I got the best edge & shave I have ever got with all my razors. I am going to strop a few more of my razors I think a August Kern Blue Steel 5/8" & my new German made 11/16" Red Imp & I will let you all know how it goes. I was really surprised by this stuff!

Glad that it worked well for you! I have tried various pastes and compounds but keep going back to just regular old CROX.

I have used CROX for years & just decided to try a new product. I am going to order a bottle of Meguiar's Ultimate Compound on Amazon Prime. Around $12.00, no shipping or sales tax.
Just tuned up an old Theo Kochs "Monte Carlo". Man is that blade sharp now.

Interesting. I would not have thought about using that as a stropping compound replacement for CrOx.

Most polish, Paint & Metal will cut steel quickly and polish a bevel. They use abrasives to cut, problem is they don’t tell you what that is or the grit rating, they are aggressive abrasives and leave a chippy edge.
Maas and Mothers do much the same.

Look at the edge under magnification. If you see chipping you will have to refinish the edge on a high grit stone to remove the chips.

An aggressive polish is a good way to remove all the stria from a bevel, then lightly joint the edge and re set on a finish stone, (just a few laps) and strop on Chrome Oxide or CBN for a very comfortable edge.

Cereal box cardboard makes a great strop for experimentation with paste.

If you or anyone else is looking for inexpensive compound that is available Sears has a good selection in store and online, here's one for $6.59, I bought it in store a command buffing compound which I believe tells you on the package what grit it is.Name: prod_8413189921.jpg

Never used the KME brand only Kens’. You really do need a progression because the jump is so high, from say .50um Chrome Oxide to .10um. or I get micro chipping, the substrate makes a big difference.

I like .25um as a progression from .50um all CBN spray on a paper hanging strop. And you do have to be mindfull of pressure, most guys use too much. To knife guys it does not matter, they are after the look and the micro toothy edge.

Shaving on it you will feel it. .10 is a good maintenance paste, you can strop on it daily.

I found this product different from Maas and similar products. It seems finer and less aggressive than those. I am not saying it is the greatest thing since sliced bread but it seems to work well for me.l think it could replace CROX for me but I want to test it for a while. I like options and I can always use it on my car!!
