Need Advice
Hi Folks,
I've did very well (no smoke for first month) and decided to congratulate myself with small gift.
Yes, new strop should be a good gift idea! I do have SRD modular paddle strop and 2 1/2" hanging strop donated by Kaptain_Zero 2 moth ago.
I don't want an expensive strop at the moment and don't considering any US vendors (shipping cost, custom duty and especially CAD/US).
I was looking few options, and appreciate you guys giving quick view and short fit back:
Bison 2 1/2" English Bridle Razor Strop in Burgundy
Bison 2 1/2" Horsehide Razor Strop
Premier 3" Red Latigo Strop with D Ring
Illinois Razor Strop Co. 827 Imperial Russia Leather Strop - Fendrihan Canada
Kanayama Llama #2196 Grit Hanging Razor Strop - Fendrihan Canada

Gah, that's a tough choice! I recently picked up a 3" SRD strop, had a really simple Filly strop from RupRazor for 4 years (I think that's 2"). I really enjoy working with the extra width. I've heard nothing but good things about the Kanayama's, but I don't own any of the one's you've posted. Personally, I'd go with the 3" latigo. 1) cause I'm quite tight fisted with money 2) That color looks great 3) the hardware looks similar/maybe the same as SRD's strops and allows you to replace the components (I may be wrong, best to ask C-Edge if it is, they're nice people)

Thank you for your reply dinnermint,
I was looking very close to 3" latigo too. Only one detail is delaying my decision is that the strop is coming with synthetic linen.Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.

The Japanese Strop is top of the line quality wise. I imagine that's about equal to the #3 or 30K. As long as you are OK with the narrower width that is what I would get. The only wrinkle is the fabric strop that comes with it. Personally I wouldn't use it unless it's broken in really well. I know others think it's fine as is.

The fabric on Japanese strop is notoriously stiff, could be difficult to use. Someone posted a lengthy break-in process to get them softer, while others said that that wasn't worth it and would break in fine with regular use. The material seems similar/same to the webbing on SRD's strops, it makes an interesting "zipping" noise when stropping. It's my first fabric strop, so I can't compare it to anything. It works great for me, but YMMV. You should also take into consideration what handle you prefer since you are looking at 3 different styles. That may help you narrow down your choices as well.

Had the Llama strop at one point. The leather is outstanding but the linen is a tough one to get used to. I didn't have it long enough to completely break the cloth in.

Thanked: 4828I have been ogling the Bison strops for a while, so I would likely lean that way, and I'm a fan of the horse hide. Congratulations on the smoke free. You will continue to feel a little better all the time, and it does ever so slowly continue to get easier to not smoke.
