Thanked: 0Serviceable, or not?
I've been using a shavette for quite some time, but decided it was finally time to take the plunge and go to a real blade. I took a razor which I inherited ( it was sitting forgotten on a shelf in my grandparents' basement for, oh, 50 years), to be honed by a man who deals in all things bladed, new, antique and collectible, and decided I ought to get a strop while I was there, since he had them. When I got home and went to try my hand at stroping, I discovered this issue:
So, my question is, am I going to be able to use this, or are those stitches going to interfere with the heel and the toe to the point of being counter-productive?

Someone with more knowledge than myself will probably chime in but I would say that is a issue. I personally wouldn't use it.
Are the stitches below the leather?

The stitched strop scares me. I might actually work but chances are it would actually hurt the edge. As far as the razor goes it looks like it might be ok, but needs a good cleanup. Might be a slight frown but I can't tell from the pic.
The older I get the more I realize how little I actually know.

Thanked: 634I would not use it. May cause damage to blade. What does stitching hold or is it just ornamental?

The man who knows all blades should have known this was not a strop for razors and I don't think he knows razor honing either. Get yourself a real strop. And a person who hones razors, and uses them. It's an heirloom treat it with the respect it deserves. Tc

Just remove the stitching or cut that bit off. Looks to be bout 3-1/2", you will do fine with 2-1/2"

Never have seen a strop with stitching..that's just odd. Is returning it to the store not an option?
