Thanked: 11Modular Paddle Strop
I had the pleasure of meeting karlej last Sunday for a bit of honing help. Turns out we live pretty close. I have finally managed to hone a razor to truly shave ready. It's amazing how much help just one hands-on session can be. Granted it was a newer Dovo that was in good shape. Karl also did a fantastic job on my SRP Logo razor, got my best shave ever from that one.
I realized after my visit that I needed the modular paddle strop and some CrOx, so ordered one and it arrived today. I have honed a few more razors, but was waiting for the shipment so I can strop w/ CrOx before traditional stropping. Now if only I wasn't headed out of town for Easter. Can't wait to get back home to try it out.
I was Karl's first student, and hope I was as good a student as he was a teacher.
Thanks Karl.

Hands on sessions are the best way to learn. Hats off to Karl also for taking the time.

Good deal! Karl is quite a craftsman, IMO.

It's always great to get in person help! By the way...the modular paddle strop is terrific and I use it frequently

Thanked: 31most of my stropping is on a paddle but I don't strop that many razors. I need the harder surface for more exact contact, paddles don't cup at all!

Very happy to hear you made contact and got help from Karl. You got excellent advice.
You will love the paddle strop. If you got the SRD modular you made a great choice. The leather that comes with it can be hand rubbed like any
other strop and it will just get better and better.Bob

Thanked: 11I did get the SRD modular, used spray CrOx on one of the felts. Did 10 laps on CrOx, 10 on the raw leather, 25 on an SRD nylon wedding and 50 on the smooth leather that came with the paddle on 5 razors I honed last week.
Shaved with one this morning. Great shave, now I have the next 4 lined up for the next 4 days. Those and the two that we honed last Sunday gives me a solid 7 day rotation.
Now to get to work on the rest of them. I still have fewer straights than my fiance has pairs of earrings, but not by much.

Always be sure your wife has more sets of earrings. It will make your life easier.

I love the modular paddle strop, and use it regularly. I strop a LOT! My routine now when I pull a razor out after it has been unused for a while is to start with 20 laps on my hanging fabric strop, then do 40 laps each on two leathers I have on the modular (English bridle and premium from SRD), then finish with 30 or 40 on a hanging Roo strop I have. Assuming it shaves well, I strop 10 fabric and 25 leather after the shave, and then 20 fabric, 30 each on the 3 leathers before my next shave. I find it just relaxes me, and keeps the edge great!
