    Default diamond paste question

I have access to Gesswein brand, orange color diamond paste. According to the web site it is 4-8 micron and 3000 mesh what ever that means and says it produces a mirror finish. Soooo, my question is, is this usable for a straight razor? Just wondering if anyone knows or has any info. Thanks all

    Maybe, but…

Diamond pastes have been around for a long time and there is a large difference in quality of paste, depending largely on their intended use, at manufacture, simply they are not all the same.

3-4 um is rather large and really, not something that cannot be easily achieved with a quality synthetic stone, for probably much less the cost.

.50um/ 30k and .25um/ 60k, Diamond spray/paste are readily available from SRD, for $23 a bottle, and work well for refreshing an edge.

With all Nano grit sprays/pastes there are a lot of factors that determine performance, it is not just grit, performance varies wildly.

Currently Diamond Paste/sprays go down as low as 0.005um, approximately, 3.2 million grit, insanely small.

While, I have not experimented with Nano grit diamond sprays with razors, as much as I have with CBN. I have found anything smaller than .25um is really too small and will produce an edge too sharp, that will exfoliate skin without any improvement in performance.

A .50um or .25um CBN edge is very comfortable edge.

Someplace around here we have a chart with equivalents with grit and mesh and diameter.

With diamond it's all about the sorting of the product. Cheap preparations have poor sorting which gives bad results.

There was some guy on another site who claimed to do all his honing with diamond but I've never seen anyone else use it like that. For most of us .50 and .25 is what is used as a finishing medium and actually .25 can produce a harsh edge.

Personally I only use it on selective razors with very hard steel.
