The materials that can serve as a strop are only limited by your imagination.

I actually just tried this last night and was pleasantly surprised, I had read about using newspaper so I thought why not try it. I had just honed a blade and it worked well. Good post

,,,,,and sometimes we allow our imagination to wander a bit far.

I have a new Bisonmade linen/English bridal leather strop and while it is very nice, I still like to use a newspaper strop! So simple and effective!

I haven't done it in a while (mainly because I never get an actual newspaper anymore lol!), I used to save up the Sunday comics, or any large color section of the paper with a lot of green ink, the theory being that it was sort of like using CrOx. As others have said, fold it several times for durablility, and lay in on a flat surface. I could really tell a difference in my edges doing this. Now I want to try it again-can you still get newspapers?

Oh, and what a poster said about denim blue jeans being great stropping material. I still enjoy stropping up a good knife edge on my jeans on a camping trip!

If you don't want to buy a newspaper, just pick up a stack of those ads at the entrance to your local grocery store.

LOL we have come up with some good stuff over time eh?

You how many times a family member some time ago would visit and say:

"why is there a newspaper hanging from the towel rod next to a belt?"

    "It's for stropping"

    "what the eff is stropping"

    "uh, well, dinner's ready"

    Gents,
Check the Kanayama strop section on this 'Strop' page/title. don't waste time and money on experimenting, check out the kanayama strops. best available IMHO.

The OP asked about newspaper strops, not high end leather strops that are out of reach for many members here. Experimentation is part of the learning curve.
