Strops
Excuse this simple question. Stroping a straight razor on different types of strops ( different leathers and suedes and cloths) hurt that razor , or makes little difference.
Thanks Harry

Stropping is considered a mandatory exercise when using a straight. Leather is the classic material and though different leathers look and feel different, as long as the strop is made from quality leather the end result is the same. When it comes to using different fabrics you need to look at the material but most fabrics work too.

Thanked: 104To answer your question, don't think of a strop as an instrument that 'sharpens' your razor. At the edge of your razor, it's finest point, is bought into alignment, by stropping against a leather or similar product. Time and experience has shown that leathers get the edge of your razor to it's best cutting ability. Improves the 'fin' aligns it so you get a uniform straight edge, thus a comfortable shave. Whether you choose an expensive cordovan strop or a more simple strop. The end result is pretty much the same. The only way you can hurt your razor, when stropping, is if you 'roll' the edge, meaning you have a large bow in the strop and it has bent the fin to one side or the other. there are many great strops out there, but unless you are an experienced user, buy a 3 inch cheap one. Have a look through this the 'Strops' forum, heaps there to amuse.

I started SR shaving in early July. I use a newspaper strop and a leather board strop. I also have a leather-linen hanging strop, but I prefer the solid surface of the board strop. When I use my hanging strop I lay it on the table. I find the stability helps me focus on my technique.
