    Default Strop on a Spring?

My Brother-in Law is having a Strop made for me by one the local craftsmen in Southern Utah. The man asked if I wanted it attached to a spring.
He said the old time barbers liked the action of a strop attached to a spring. I never heard of this.

I don't think I've ever seen that but it makes sense. Spring absorbs the shock & helps keep a steady tension on the strop. Somehow I doubt veteran barbers would need that tho, seems like more of a gadget to help beginners.

I've never heard of this, though I know a loom strop gives a tiny "bounce" with a little less tension, and you could certainly hold your strop a little less taut for a similar effect, as some like to do. It would be interesting to try, though.

    My friend,

As has been posted this 'spring action' is new to me. If it's a hanging strop I can't fathom it's usage with that said if it's as some kind of 'loom' or other strop that's supported then it may make sense to allow a little give.

If there is anyway of having the craftsman provide some pictures of what he's proposing, I think that would be very helpful.
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

If it really is a strop dangling from a spring I might be interested in one to help a friend of mine, the spring part anyway. He hasn't taken the plunge yet & it sounds like a great way to learn the right tension without having someone there to correct you.
