Thread: Homemade Latigo hanging strop

Seeing as my old hanging strop was pretty much used up, I decided to have a go at making my own. I used 2.5" latigo calf and nickel chicago screws. The handle is just two pieces of scrap leather I cut and folded, and then dyed black. I just bought an old firehose to use as a linen side, but for now it's just leather. All in all it cost me about 35$ and took me about half an hour to make. For a first time leatherworking project I'd like to think it came out pretty darn well.

A valiant first effort. Looks good. How do you find the Latigo compares to what you were using before? I'll be interested to see how things turn out with the fire hose. Do keep us posted. And good luck.

Nice work. I made the one I use, but I haven't made a nice handle like that yet, so it just has a D ring at each end. I think latigo is smoother than what I used. Where did you get the fire hose? I've been wanting to get some to make a fabric Strop.
I just looked after seeing your post and saw they sell some on eBay by the foot pretty cheap.

I bought a 25 foot fire hose brand new for about 80$. Im going to cut off what I need and most likely sell or give away the rest. I did see some one ebay but they were all too wide and dirty, and Im really lazy.

New was definitely the way to go as far as I'm concerned. The more I thought about where those used hoses may have been the less appealing they were.

Did you burnish the edges or just try to make the cuts as clean/smooth as possible?
