Do you think washing a dirty cloth will remove all those abrasive particles? I dont think you can. Anyone ever try to wash a crox or diamond pasted strop? Anyway you may go through a process only to end up with nothing is my point. And you still need hardware. I think i paid $35 plus shipping for mine. And i will never have to buy it again.

And, it has been noted that if very dirty, it is a waste of time trying to clean a firehose which has been used for the firehose purpose.

A suggestion of buying a new scrupleworks is a definite alternative instead of wasting time and materials.

Also, as being that 'other member' who sent you a NOS 'hard and loud' poly firehose strop at your repeated requests, please send it back as I can use it!
    Thank You!

    No, it wasn’t.

Soaking in mild soap, scrubbing, rinsing in vinegar rinse water and rolling between soaking, relaxes the fibers. One on line linen cleaning site recommends soaking vintage linen in clear water for as much as 5 weeks to fully hydrate the fibers, before adding any detergent, bleach or Oxi-clean

My bride rinses our towels and linen in vinegar, added to the rinse cycle in the washer and they come out soft and whiter, removes the soap, it also cleans the tub of dried soap scum.

In your case, it appears the hose was well used and damaged when you received it, using Oxi-clean may have damaged the flax fibers further.

There are very specific direction for using Oxi-clean and especially rinsing it from the fabric. Additionally, Oxi-clean is not a detergent, it is a detergent booster of Hydrogen Peroxide, with clear warnings about concentrations and breathing the fumes.
Thanks for the explanation. I clearly haven't gotten to that point yet. I have one section of hose I'm satisfied with, but it could be better. I love the draw and feedback, but I think a there is room for improvement, especially with a better medium. I'm going to get some unused hose that has been stored better and see how it goes.

Just for some who would like to buy it new raw hide fire hose has single jacket rack and reel fire hose for 41 dollars for 50 feet. Brand new never used. May try here if the results are not what you are looking for. However i was always told to try and fail first with an idea. If ya dont ya wont learn anything. Keep workin on it may end up with something great. You can always reuse the hardware if it dont.

If I'm successful I may try making some two component linen and poly strops. We will see.

Damn Josh. Plan on needing a lot of them huh? Maybe a secondary for some big project you got going on in the background with horse leather?
