HAHAHA it felt like a badge of shame for me, too, that first destroyed strop! It was hideously mutilated when I gave up on it and buried it deep in the trash after saving the hardware. Made another out of some crap leather I got at Tandy. After maybe 6 months of daily use I sprang for a new no-name strop my barber ordered for me that seemed impossibly expensive at the time. I kept the DIY one as a backup for I guess 15 years and never used it. It got stiff as a board and I (over)oiled it with mink oil, and it turned into a smelly, soggy mess so I tossed it.

I won’t write a freaking book length, but to start, whipped dog good place to start, Tony Miller sells a basic beater too, any inexpensive strop will do as long as it’s in good shape. Takes a long time to get where you will improve an edge from the leather
