Thread: Strop, which one to get.

I have this catalog from my barber and it has an Illinois strop for 30 dollars. Are these good strops or should I stick with the filly?

I have an Illinois strop and it's great. I don't know if it's better than the filly (never used it).

if your a newbe I would stick to the filly unless you feel confident in your stropping and if thats the case I say go for it get yer self a Illinios strop I have three

I'd spend the extra bucks for a tony miller artisan strop. they last forever so it's money well spent.

I haven't tried the SRD strops but obviously they are highly regarded too.

Illinois is a good strop but if you want to go top shelf Straight Razor Designs, Heirloom Strop Company or HandAmerican are all a superior product.

Don't forget Ruprazor! My Paladin is amazing.

That's what I have as well, and it works fine.

After 8 or so years of experience, all I've ever had were Illinois 127 strops. Might try another type one day, but they work well for me.

Yes the Illinois strop is a good strop. l like mine.
So is the filly from what folk tell.

Which one are you looking at for 30 dollars?

A first strop should be inexpensive but not cheep. I suspect
you will nick it since I about sliced through my first strop. As
luck would have it the slice I inflicted was not in the way of
normal use and I was able to use it for years. A decent one
last almost forever.

Some will eventually want a strop that can be pasted which is
an ideal thing to do with an inexpensive slightly nicked strop.
About this time next year you will have some idea what
to ask for as an upgrade if you think you need it.

I went with the filly and so far it seems to be a good strop. However I wanted to get a heirloom for after I get out of the newbie stage. At that point I found out that you can get a practice strop for 7.50 along with the heirloom which I did just in case. If I had it to do over again I would skip the filly and go straight to the heirloom with the practice strop. Its a little pricier option but some people myself included that would like a top o the line strop later, why not just do it now. If money is an issue I think you will be happy with the filly but I have no idea about the illinois since I have never used one.
