Thread: a possibly terrible idea

for the past few months I've been in Auz, which has been great, and has much to do with my absence, and little do do with my idea. but never the less, I found myself in need of a more travel conducive strop, so I tried some gutted parachute cord. no idea if this has been tossed around here before, but in the case it hasn't, and I in fact have come up with a new idea (which I doubt) that would be cool. The cord flattens quite well, and I have two lengths, one with Crox and one plain. So far so good, it seems to be doing the trick. it is however a bit of a challenge to strop on a 1/4 inch wide strop, so it may not not be for everyone, and I suspect that some blades will not like it at all. i've been using a bengalli square point, that is fairly heavy, so that may be why its working, or maybe it doesn't matter and that blade just keeps cutting no matter what I do.
input? thoughts? tar and feathers?

If it works it works.
If it does work, look at a bit of nylon webbing in a rock climbing
or camping shop. I see some inexpensive one and two inch flat webbing
and also belts that might work. But for travel I see cotton
and leather belts as handy stuff to have. And you have something
to keep your pants up with. No need for CrOx on a short trip.

good point, although my belts are usually too beat up or full of muck to touch my razors. the webbing is a good thought, I was thinking kind of hyper-light, and it was what I had handy. I'll see what MEC has when I get home.

Car safety belt works well, too.

Use the x pattern for sure .....

Newspaper on a flat surface works. I strop on the inside of my forearm while traveling, or you can strop on your palm if you are comfortable with the small area (I am not - don't cut yourself trying).

I've been using the inside of a leather belt when traveling. I use one all the time so it's just a matter of hooking it over something and away you go. Fits with my "one item many uses" philosophy too.

As for using a piece of gutted paracord well, interesting to know that it's possible and might be useful in an emergency but for everyday use (even when traveling) - I don't think so.

I've never had much luck with the newspaper trick, although it is worth trying again, and if my hide works just as well.. never thought about using my arm. seems there are a great many things to try to strop with, this could be fun, though rather unscientific.

good pair of jeans works well, too.
