Thanked: 522Interesting stropping issue
[QUOTE from hi_bud_gl
i do approximately 10-15 passes no more then that then i clean edge of the blade and move leather side of the strop. QUOTE]

In his post several months ago concerning the use of pastes on the canvas side of the strop, Sham very subtlely suggests that we should clean the blade edge after stropping on pasted canvas before moving to the plain leather side of the strop so as not to contaminate the clean leather. I've never given this any thought
But the same idea is true when honing from a coarser stone to a finer stone. Clean the residue off the blade before going to a finer stone so as not to contaminate the finer stone.
Thanks Sham for giving us some more neat things to think about.

I am anal about that. So much so that early on I sold my Norton combo and bought single grit Nortons to replace it. I was afraid there would be contamination from the 4 to the 8. I always rinse and wipe the blade before moving up in grit and will continue to do so regardless of anyone's opinion on whether it is necessary. Ben Franklin wisely said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm pretty anal about that too... I'm sure it's unnecessary, but I go so far as to have a new sheet of paper towel (or at least an "uncontaminated" half sheet) for wiping my razor at each grit...
