I use a 2" wide leather paddle and several different 1 & 1/2" wide Balsa strops, and if it works for me....

I think the width of the strop is just a matter of preference, especially for a paddle type strop, since it doesn't flex like a hanger.

I have also seen other users discuss using the sides of their hones or cutting a hone so as to make a thinner (1" to 1 & 1/2" wide) hone for use on smiling razors.

    I say go for it!
