strops and neetsfoot

i think i got carried away with the amount of neetsfoot oil i put on my SRD lateigo. i put a good wet coat on the strop and let it soak in and then did it again the next nite. before i oiled the strop ,it was slick and glassy,so i thought the oil would just help break it in, so now i have alot of draw! any way to tone down the draw.thanks

I can only imagine the draw on an over-oiled latigo!

I don't know if it would work but I would wrap paper towels around it and lay it on a flat surface overnight stropping side down. If I'm not mistaken the paper towels will draw some of the oil out without harming the strop. Neatsfoot will definitely increase draw.

If you want to hasten the process, cover the strop with a couple of layers of absorbent paper and iron it - make sure the iron is on a medium to low setting or you will damage the leather - this draws a lot out in one go. Then do as Jimmy said. Piling some books on it (strop wraped in paper, flat side agains flat table top or whatever, books on rough side of strop) will draw out more oil. You can try it after a day - if not to your satisfaction repeat.

Don't be tempted to scrub it with saddle soap (yet) - different latigos react differently to it, so it's a bit of an unknown quantity.

OK heres another twist on what Jimmy said, lay paper towels over and under the leather and then roll it out with a rolling pin. Be sure to clean any excess oil from the pin before your wife beats you with it.

This is what I do after applying too much. Mind you, I have never given a strop two coats, what made you apply so much?

Send the strop to Maximillian in Las Vegas. He can stretch it out in the hot Nevada sun for three days and have it back to you dry as a bone inside of a week.

Seriously, my first thought was to saddle soap the hell out of it but on second thought, let that be the last resort. For now, go with the paper towels and rolling pin and iron on low setting. The heat from the iron will lower the viscosity of the oil and allow it to more readily wick-out of the strop. Hopefully!!

On third thought, let us not rule out several passes through the horizontal deoilification mechanism which might employ rubbing alchohol in the same manner as we might remove the mineral oil, baby oil or camellia oil or motor oil or nox-rust or vaseline or WD-40 from our straight razor blades.

Be careful what you apply to your precious shaving equipment. Some of dis stuff ain't good for ya!!
