Exactly what I did - I used contact cement to glue two pieces of 3" strap from Tandy to a piece of 1x4 red oak (one side CrOx, one side plain). I had to sand the leather down a little to smooth it out but almost 2 years later it's still my only strop and works great.

Tandy carries the contact cement (Barge Cement brand) and cowhide leather strips in various widths. I bought a 1.5" by 72" strip for about $16 and they gave me a 2.5" by 24 inch for free from the scrap bin. They also have Chicago screws and D-rings as well as latigo leather strips.

Here is what I used my 1.5" by 72" strip for:

    Default Leather

Tandy also sells 3" x 50" strips of topgrain cowhide.

If you can find a source for bridle leather, this works better than topgrain.

I've used cowhide from Tandy as well as horsehide from some Hand American horse butt strips. My daily strop is a DIY.

    Default Aha!!

Aha! The old DIY Manufacturing Co. I have some stock in that Company.

That horse butt is good leather and mostly indestructable but sort of stiff. I used that on a flatbed strop on ceramic tile. I'm not sure how to get better draw out of the horse butt. I refuse to paste it.

You guys should try some bridle leather. I sent two bridle strops to Sham and I presume he's putting them through their paces as we speak. I hope he gets good results.

    Default Home Made!

Here's mine. I have a tote of leather odds and ends. I clamp it in my vise and have at it.
