    Default Wood carvers strop ok?

    Hello all,

    Would a strop like the first one in this link:

    Leather Strops

    be ok to use or is it too small??

    Question2: would their paste be ok to use?

    Their strop looks similar to what I made for my first strop... cowhide scrap glued to wood. Probably ok to start with. The compounds are likely more coarse than the ones you would get that are specifically designed/marketed for straight razors, but once again it would likely work. I have used a similar green woodworkers compound from Lee Valley tools and it does work I have read that members here have pursued it with the vendor and found that its a more coarse abrasive than pure CrOx powder from Hand American (which seems ok to me as long as you are aware and thats what you are expecting it to be). The Dovo compounds (red and green) would likely be cheaper and more of a known quantity if they are available to you.

    Stay away from the pastes, they're for tools. It looks like they're giving the total measurement for the strop at 13 inches, which would mean that the leather on it would be about 6-7 inches, which would be pretty small. You could use it, but they're better inexpensive options available.
