How do I apply my chromium oxide?
Hi folks,
I have an srd red latigo 3" strop and I want to apply chromium oxide to the material part of the strop. I bought some from srd, it came in tin foil and looks like a stick of chalk. I searched around and found several random suggestions:
- heat the stick with a hair dryer and rub it on
- grate the stick, mix the resulting powder with mink oil and apply
I've seen the photo walkthrough of applying it when it comes as a powder, but I'm not sure which advice to follow.
Could someone with experience please advise me on this?
Thanks!

Hi,
With such 'stick' pastes, I usually rub them lightly on the fabric, and rub off any excess with a cloth. You just need a light coating on the fabric.
The more experienced persons here at SRP will be able to give you better/fuller advice
Have fun !
best regards
Russ

Thanks Russ.
I didn't bother heating it up or grinding it into a powder. I tried just what you said, just ran it along the material like crazy then wiped it off with a old rag and it looks to me just right, no big excesses anywhere, just a slight tint of green to the black material now.

I scrape it off with the edge of a knife onto the leather and then rub it in with my finger. It goes on a lot more evenly..

My CrOx came in powdered form, I mixed it to a paste with an artists brush in a bowl with water, then brushed it to the webbing. It goes on heaviest at the start of your stroke so I applied it as even as possible to the entire strop then let it dry, I found going back over the webbing with dry tooth brush helped to even out the areas with excess. Hope this helps.
