To me, it is not a waste of time, it is a good way, I would say wonderful and great, to strop a razor. I do that and I am very happy with the results I get. You say there are much better ways to strop your blade. Which ways, for example?
I palm strop and I used to palm strop even ten years ago and my sight is absolutely great. I will always say YES to palm stropping! The RazorGuy - StraightRazorChannel on Youtube and Google+

Here you can find a video I made about Mastro Livi art:
At minute 1:05:10 Mastro Livi talks about hand palm stropping.
If you are looking for more Mastro Livi videos, you can take a look at my Youtube channel, where I created a play list with all the ones I found on YouTube: StraightRazorChannel - YouTube

I gave it a try, but could not get my razor quite as sharp as I get with canvas and leather. My pocket knife did feel a little sharper after palm stropping, though. Razor palm stropping is just not for me!

I find your edge is only as smooth as the last surface it was treated on. I find that the kanayama strops really get me edges very smooth and sharp, but the skin on your palm is even smoother and I find my razor is even keener when hand stropped.

Thanked: 8I could ruin an edge in a heartbeat. I work in a fab shop and have metal splinters in both palms. Very few make it through t he calluses but when one does I spend about twenty minutes with tweezers pulling 10 or 15 of the little suckered out. I have stopped on my thigh though. Seems to smooth a leather stopped blade a little more.

When traveling I always Palm Strop and I have gotten as many as 16 shaves on one extended trip before the edge fell off the planet. When I go home and used my microscope I found that the real culprit was rust, micro oxidation on the bevel. Lately I have been using slightly boiled water, cooled just a bit and rinse my blades in that, wiping them down before putting them away. This has helped.

too funny! While reading this thread I decided two things:
1. I have to watch these videos.
2. Before reading the red text I was thinking, 'With the edges of my strop looking like a zipper in certain places, there is NO WAY I'm going to try this technique...I know chicks dig scars, but not when you look like 'a cutter.'Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium
