    Default Diamond Spray Difficulties

    Group,

I recently bought a Lynn Abrams Modular strop, and have added the .5 micron Diamond spray and hard felt strop after my 12k honing.

I used this at Lynn's house, but I seem to be doing something wrong. I have never had a problem getting a razor shave ready honing up through my 12k, and then going to the strop.

All of the razors that I touched up on my 12k and followed up with the .5 mircon diamond spray are now pulling during my shave. It is the only change I have made, and it is consistant between all 6 razors.

Is there trick to using the hard felt and diamond spray?

    As always, thanks in advance.

    David

    Hi David,

That diamond spray is aggressive stuff, so you only need to do 5-10 passes on the strop, and you should only have a very light coating of the diamond.

When I loaded my denim flatbed hone with 0.5 diamond, I held the bottle about 8" away from the hone and sprayed maybe half a dozen times, that was all. Then I left it 24 hours to dry and started using it. That seems to have worked quite well, but its really easy to overcook an edge on diamond..!

    Hope thats of some help!

    All the best,

    Stuart

Thanks Stuart, that is exactly what I was looking for.

How far back would you suggest I take them? Would 8k be far enough or did I damage them enough for a 5k? I was going to go back to a 5k.

    Thanks,
    David

A rule of thumb I like to follow when honing is to start on the highest stone possible and only move down if you need to. You can always hone more if you need to, but you cant put metal back on..!

Start on the 12k and do 10-15 light X strokes and see if that brings it back. If not, then drop down to the 8k and do 10 X strokes, then back up to the 12k and so on. Only move down to the 5k if the 8k doesnt do it.

If the edge coming off the diamond spray is too harsh for you, finish that edge with 5 or 6 laps on CrOx. You might get a smoother shave after finishing on the less agressive CrOx.............

i've been using the modular with same as you .5 then 0.25 5 laps on each and the sahve of both were no problem not harsh at all i think i could easily done a little more i have also added 5 to 10 laps cro on the rough leather with no probs. this awas after my coticule. If its still pulling. To me that means not sharpenough . or may be it is over done. i would do a small pyramid with your 5k/8k by doing say 3/3 1/5 1/5 untill you can shave of 8k nicley. Only then i would move to 12k with only 10 laps and test . If every thing is nice and smooth move to .5 diamond spray and then test shave see what differance you get. this way you will not what has been acheived with each hone and your .5 spray i'd do 5 laps first and then another five next time .
