Thread: Yet another roo strop.

Made this 'Roo hide strop today, I call it a fail though, as I find it too wide at 3". Will drop down to 2" which will suit the Dee's better anyway. Less screwing around then. I'll end up making more if the 2" size is successful. The photo isn't the best, it's dark time here now, and the dunny light and camera flash don't mix too well.

That looks really good! I must admit, I prefer 3" strops to 2", but its really personal preference..!

How does roo leather compare to leathers like latigo?

Well, I don't have a great deal of experience with the different leathers out there, but from the limited experience that I do have, I feel that the 'roo hide conveys more feel as to what's happening. Almost like it's telling you the story of what's going on with the edge of the razor as you strop it.
I have two other strops to compare to, the roo being the middle of them for smoothness of leather, but it draws the best out of the three. After I try out a new 2" wide strop, that I make next, I will have a better idea of what I like the most.
The 3" wide would suit a longer bladed razor better I think. As it is there is a portion of the 3" strop that doesn't get used in stropping and due to the thinner roo hide, I find the un-used portion rises up a little. Not much, and I daresay it's harmless, but it's off putting a little for me.

By the looks of that picture I think that leather might be a bit too thin. But good job still.

Kangaroo hide is thin. It makes up for that by being the strongest leather weight for weight compared to any other leather. When you pull it out to strop with, it pulls out drum tight and since you shouldn't be stropping edge first, you shouldn't have a worry about nicking it.

You've done a good job. I envy you. I wish I lived in Australia and had access to Kangaroo leather -_-;
