I like linen and I also like webbed fabric such as SRD furnishes. I haven't tried cotton. I've stropped a razor as fast as I can, which is fairly fast, on various leather and non leather strops and held the blade to my cheek and didn't feel any appreciable heat.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 39I got to thinking about this after reading an old post about slow stropping vs fast stropping, with and without a secondary material.
They did get superior results from fast vs slow stropping.
Maybe it was due to the heat build up in the leather instead of the razor. The secondary material did have to have an effect, so I am fishing to see what seems to be the prefered secondary and why?
I meant to say linen instead of cotton on previous post.

Just IMHO but I definitely get superior results using linen or webbed fabric before the leather. Speed is good if the operator can handle it. Developing a steady rhythmic stroke is most important. Speed comes with practice. Rushing it can lead to miscues and damaged strops or razors.
