Neatsfoot oil?
Can anyone tell me or direct me to a thread which has the proper use of neatsfoot oil on a strop. I picked up the new SRD horsehide and I find it kind of stiff. Ive been rubbing it with my hand a few times a day for a week. That seemed to help a bit. Should I stick with this for a little longer before I try to treat with the dressing?

Thanked: 3795The biggest mistakes you can make with oiling a strop is putting on too much and putting it on in a spotty manner.
You really want to sneak up on it, if you need it at all. My preference in oiling old brittle strops is to put a little on my fingertips and then streaking it down the length of the backside of the strop--never on the stropping surface. Then I rub the backside vigorously to spread the oil. I repeat this over the course of several days in order to allow the oil to soak in and to make sure that I don't put on too much.
Since this is a new SRD strop, I would suggest that you first check in with Lynn or Don about the strop as they probably can give you the best advice for how to treat it, and more importantly, IF you should treat it.
