    Default Horsehide < 3"

Hey fellas, I've been thinking about getting a horsehide strop, but I would like one under 3" wide. Any ideas where I could pick one up? Thanks.

Neil Miller offers a 2.5" horsehide/linen combo at www.strop-shop.co.uk - hand made straight razor strops, razor pouches, shaving accessories, vintage razors, razor honing and restoration. I am sure you will get other references for a horsehide as well.

Virtually any vintage strop is 2.5 inches so you could probably find one on eBay.

I've been looking at vintage a lot. If a vintage strop isn't marked as to what kind of leather is used, is it pretty safe to assume that it is horsehide? It seems like the vast majority of strops were, back then. Are there any visual cues that can identify a horsehide strop?

I'm not a strop expert, but I think if you find one that is ID as "Russian" or "Shell" or "Horsehide," then it is probably horsehide.

RupRazor.com has some nice horsehide strops. While many people are saying the "new" standard is a 3" strop, I still see most strops at 2.5", with a premium added for a 3" strop.

Everybody seems to have 2" and 2.5" strops, and you'll save some money as well.

Yeah, I just found those. I haven't heard much about them, and a search here didn't result in much. Has anyone used one of these? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a good everyday strop. Plus, you can get them with a barber-style grip, and I like that.

Default 2 1/2 in Horsehide Strop link

I found this, and it's probably going to be my son's 18th birthday present. It's nothing fancy but looks like it's usable as a beginner's stop. It's 2 1/2" horsehide/canvas (linen). I thought that this might help in your search. Here's the link:

$ 19.50 for a horsehide strop? Seems almost too good to be true.

That's funny because he's selling the thing and if you read between the lines he's telling you they are cheap strops. As a daily plain stropper I wouldn't touch one. If you're looking for a beginners strop and you are afraid you will ruin it then it might be a good idea to use at first.
