Livi Loom Strops
Ok...
I want to hear from any owners of the Livi loom strops and what your take on them is. Do you tape up razors when you use the pasted side? Do you miss not having the canvas aspect of a strop?
I opted for the aluminum handled version. I have seen that style used in many Livi videos, and if its good enough for him, its good enough for me :P Besides, paying an extra
$100 for a wooden handle.

I like mine. I don't use it much but it is very good when I do. I do the canvas/chrom-ox side just as Mastro did in the snake razor video and follow with the luxuriously soft leather just as he did. I say I do just as Mastro did, maybe not as expertly.

Well I just received my strop from SRD. I didnt get the extra chromium oxide, but there is enough on the linen/canvas side that I dont think ill need some in awhile.
I was actually shocked at how small the strop is. I measured approximately 2.5" x 9.5". I suppose the videos he has, such as the snake one, are custom sizes he makes for himself. Or it is an illusion being played on my eyes.
I havent used it yet, as I just unwrapped it, but the leather is indeed very soft. Now the fear of nicking it is setting in, but ill get over that quick

I like loom strops much more than paddles, but I use both. Be sure to loosen the tension after use.

How tight should it be? What is the harm in leaving it with tension. I can press down a bit on the leather now, so it does have some give. Do you really increase the tension before the stropping..then release it each time?
WOW....never knew anything about that..and im glad you responded.

Leather and canvas stretch. Whether you would run out of bolt to continue stretching it more is questionable but I always take the tension off of mine too. Ounce of prevention or something like that.
Here is a video of Mastro using his loom strop, the short one, after an interesting demonstration of honing technique. The stropping begins at 2:21 of the video . We could have saved our money and used the palm of our hands according to the video.

How much tension do you put in your strop? Do you think that the size of that loom is the same size as what we bought?

Yes the one in the video above is the standard. The long one in another video was limited to Mastro and Lynn AFAIK. I imagine it would cost many bags of gold.
I tighten my loom about as taut as I would pull my hanging strop. Snug but I don't make it trampoline tight. You can adjust it either way once you figure out what you like. Really is a handy tool.

I'll second Jimmy's comments.
Mine is in a box. I tighten it before removing from the box. How tight is up to you, but I don't want it so tight that I can pluck it and play a tune!
When I replace it in the box I just loosen the tension to prevent stretching. Only takes four or five quick twists of the handle.
