Thanked: 0Newbee Question
Hi I have been shaving with a shave ready dovo for about 2 months. I stromp before every shave. Lately the razor has been feeling a bit dull. Is it possible I need a hone already, the razor won't shave the hair on my arm w/o a bit of pressure.
Would a paste bring it back?
I know my stromping tech. was not good a first. But feel like I have gotten better at it.
can some one provide a link on how to use paste?
Thankks

Thanked: 1160Keep it simple.........
Before goin off and using pastes, you might want to seek out a honemaster to have your blade put back to shave ready and practice your stropping more.Don't rely on pastes to fix your technique. And check out the wiki on stropping and honing

Thanked: 1160Actually ,let me clarify...all too many times newbs get frustrated too quickly or get too hurried with this. The wiki here is the best source for information.Trust me on this.As we tell all the new guys ...read the wiki before getting extra strops and pastes and diamond hones etc. This is a simple primative art and the simpler you keep it the happier and better you will be.Once you get your technique down good and get the knowledge imbedded, then go for the frills.Too many people don't read the wiki enough and start taking in the flood of information that comes from the hundreds of well meaning members we have here. AND WELCOME TO SRP

The ability to cut arm hair, from my limited experience, is crucial. I'm attempting to put a razor into shave ready condition. It's not quite there yet, but it does a fine job shaving my arm. It's getting to the point that I'm having trouble finding hair on my arm to shave.

After about 2-3 months shaving with my first razor (Dovo B.Q. half Hollow) I definitely noticed things were not as they once were, I also had a second razor by this point that was fresh that is really how I knew.
My initial lack of stropping technique was likely to blame as well. I have a Filly Strop that has green paste on the scrub side I did try to use that and I suppose it helped a little, however paste on a hanging strop will only get you so far and you may already be beyond that point as I was.
I agree having one of the honemisters touch up the blade for you will get you back to a known edge and is the safest way forward. I chose to skip pastes or sprays and just get a stone to learn with.
I am sure I will be sticking with straight razors so I went ahead and purchased a Naniwa 12k and DMT for doing touch ups.
After watching the One Stone Hone video I was able to refresh my Dovo. The experience of honing also brought me to a small epiphany with my shaving and stropping technique. I honed, stropped and had my smoothest shave yet. This was my experience YMMV.Last edited by TeMpTiN; 01-15-2011 at 05:12 AM.
