Opinions wanted: "Smoothest" Paste
Well, I'm at the point where I could use some opinions. I hope you guys have opinions.
Thanks to Glen, http://straightrazorpalace.com/video...-gssixgun.html, I've gotten to the point of producing really nice edges to shave with, and doing so consistently with the 4/8K combo, finishing on a 12K, then straight to leather.
I'd like to take the next reasonable step. Research in the Help files indicates a nice felt strop might be a good choice. If so, could you offer an opinion on what pastes I should use? I'm looking for "smooth" rather than "sharp", as the razors I hone seem sharp enough to give me nice shaves. I'd just like to go for "nicer".
How should I proceed? A) Is there a paste material known for it's "smoothness", and B) Is it necessary to step through grit sizes with pastes as one does with hones? And, (assuming that at some point one reaches the point of diminishing returns), is there a grit size for whatever material you recommend that gets you to "this is as good as it can get without me getting anal"?
And of course, if my perspective on this is off feel free to straighten me out.
Thanks everyone,

Thanked: 4942For smoooooth, I like the Chromium Oxide spray on the felt. Definitely works well in my opinion. 10 light X strokes after the 12K and you should be there.
Have fun,
Lynn

mbaglio100,
+1 on the above advice !
I prefer to use 0.5 micron CrOx powder (no carrier) rubbed into a tallow tanned leather panel for my Neil Miller modular paddle strop. For me, this gives the edges my chops like
I have also had excellent results with CrOx on the SRD felt as Mr Abrams has suggested.
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ

Thanked: 25Chromium oxide seems a bit like aspirin: it does great things with almost zero negative side effects.
I've heard of people who go through insane stropping progressions--cubic boron, aluminum oxide, chromium oxide, diamonds down to .1 microns--but I've never heard anyone say anything bad about chromium oxide.

Cubic boron nitride is great stuff, beats CrOx IMHO.

I really want to try that CBN spray on felt or a sham wow. Chefknivestogo.com is the only place I see the spray online and it's about 30.00usd though...
