I believe it can be. I've not tried it myself but I think there are some other guys here who have used the hard wool felt as an alternative to fabric.
I certainly wouldnt think it would have a detrimental effect on the edge.
Give it a try and let us know what you think..!

I have hard felt on two strops, one I keep plain, the other with .5 diamond spray. I use the plain just like I do with the linen strop.

that was my plan, just wanted to see if that is how it works, i though maybe it was just made for the sprays. only problem is that i also ordered chromium oxide spray and want to spray them both, guess ill have to buy another felt pad . so it just a few stokes on the chromium oxide to refresh a blade right? like 5-10?

Thanked: 4942The hard wool can definitely be used in lieu of linen or poly webbing before the leather.
Have fun,

Wouldn't felt be very absorbent and also stretch when being tightened. I don't know??

The hard felt that is used for strops is significantly different from ordinary felt. It probably is somewhat absorbent since it holds liquid sprays well but stretching is not an issue at all. It's a really good material for use as a strop (treated or not) but you have to use the right type of felt.

Thanked: 3227Thanks to Dan for asking the question and Lynn for the answer. My strop has felt also and I was using it before the leather but was beginning to wonder. The felt material reminds me of the "Felts" we used on the Kraft pulp machines.
