Thread: How thick? 8-9oz Latigo

I've been doing some research and asking around about getting some leather to replace what used to be on a razor box that I inherited from my Great Great Grandfather (yes two greats). Unlike strop boxes this box would have had the leather nailed/stapled/tacked into the end (there are holes visible) with the leather draped over the back. In searching out leather that would work I've seen latigo offered that was 8-9oz, but I have no idea what this means. I know latigo is a softer leather (even Hard latigo is supposedly rather soft), but I think that thick leather probably won't work too well in this application.

So the question at hand: How thick is 8-9oz Latigo? Does anybody know? Thanks!

1 ounce of leather thickness = 1/64" or 0.4 mm. So 8-9 oz. leather is approx. 1/8"-9/64" thick.

In theory this measurement is based on the assumption that one square foot of leather will weigh a certain number of ounces and will be a certain uniform thickness. Hence, one square foot of leather that weighs 3 ounces theoretically would be a 3-ounce leather.

That's exactly right. It works out to something over 3mm, maybe 3.5mm. A decent thickness for a strop.

Don't be too sure about all hard latigos being quite soft though - the mexican tan process produces a very stiff latigo, really hard to cut and hard to get any cups or crowns out.

Thanks for the info. I figured the oz measurement had to correlate to something, but had no frame of reference to put it in.

The trouble with latigo is that I've only heard of hard or soft here on SRP. Nowhere online have I heard of hard or soft latigo. The guy that runs the boot shop down town said that he could get in latigo strips, but he called them belt stock. I may see if he can get more details, or if the price is right just have him order a strip and see if I get lucky.
