    Default The Sterling Stropper

I just found a "The Sterling Stropper" at an antique shop, they were selling it in a garage sale which was basically just all the junk they had in the back room. It is gonna need a lot of cleaning up. does anyone have one of these? if so, how well do they work?

this is a link to one like it. mine is in much rougher shape, i will take some pictures my next weekend home. I only paid 1$ for it. i suspect i will have to replace the leather.

again these are in much better shape, but it is the same thing

ps: would everyone else have bought it for a dollar?

I have a no-name stropper that is essentially the same design. Except I couldn't use it the way it is pictured on the box in your second link. The razor would fall out! I haven't checked to see if the razor holder part can be tightened or or nor. I just use it with the razor above the strop, so gravity hold it in. Which also means I can't use it with any of my razors where the pivot pin isn't tight.

I also can't use it with any of my narrow razors as the holder swings them much closer to 90 degrees before the edge reaches the strop.

However, that said, it seems to work quite well with the 6/8ths and up. I've played with the idea of making a narrower copy to work with my narrower blades.

Does it work? You'll probably find it works well with one width blade and less so with anything narrower or wider, as the geometry of the edge of the blade to the leather will vary with the width of blade.

For a buck? Probably, but only as an amusement. I would clean it up and display it. I would never use it though.
