I'm pretty new to honing. My experience this:
    Got a Norton 4/8 + a Shapton 16
The blade I honed this afternoon took a LOT of time on the 8k, also before that a bit on the 4. But it was a Swedish blade; apparently quite hard. After a lot of laps on the 8 (100? Maybe a tad more) it was shaving my arm hairs. Now my hair (apparently, so the hair dressers and barbers tell me) is very soft, so it takes a lot to cut it. I then took it to the Shapton for maybe 50 more. After that it seemed good. Lots of variables. I'll tell you tomorrow how it went.
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Ok so i thought i'd report back after attempting a couple of sharpenings and strops. My setup is simple a norton 4000 / 8000 and a linen / leather strop. My first razor is a stainless steel dovo. Actually i only realised i bought the stainless steel one after the purchase i should have paid more attention because i've heard that carbon steel is the razor to start on. I managed to complete my shave after sharpening but i still feel like it could have been sharper than it was... I'm also now wondering if i should purchase a carbon steel razor because i've heard they're easier to sharpen, any thoughts on this? I guess i'll get better i just want a really really sharp shave. If there's anyone in melbourne australia that sharpens their straights can you let me know.

    Thanks!!

I find the SS Dovos can be a sweet shave when set right but that's not easily done by new honers. There's a bunch of guys in Melbourne should chime in & give you a heads up.
