Thread: Kanayama Strop

I have just taken delivery of a kanayama 3500 signature strop.
Many thanks to Jim R for a great service. The strop consists of 2 pieces of leather. One is a suede horsehide and the other is the normal kanayama leather.
To people that own strops without handles or Dee rings do you hold the 2 pieces together and strop or hold each piece singularly . This strop is beautiful and has put a very nice edge on my razor and Ican recommend it to anyone .

I thought JimR said that there were no more Kanayama strops available ? Must be from what he had in stock ?

I only hold the piece I am stropping on, the two types of leather got different flexibility and by holding the both pieces together the least flexible piece might cause the other piece to not be taught enough.

I tend to hold both pieces, but I make sure that the piece I´m not using has a little slack to compensate for the different flexibility mentioned by zephyr.

I hold the strops, leather/linen, separately the way I saw most barbers do in my youth. As a kid I was always fascinated by watching barbers strop and watched attentively. I also got instruction from a couple of them as an adult back in the '80s when I knew a few socially. OTOH, I don't think there is a right way or wrong way when it comes to holding one or both. As long as the strop is taut and does the job.

Yeah Jimmy, I think he still has a few. Signature Series Strops | Eastern Smooth.

That's a 35000 strop you got Baldylocks. You are going to love it. Both pieces are horsehide and the suede piece is great piece to go to after linen and before you strop the cordovan. I hold all of my strops as singles. Enjoy!

Nope, no more Kanayama strops...

I placed on order for one on Jan 23. Received a refund from Jim on the 28th along with apologies and the following link to a new post on his Eastern Smooth website explaining his discontinuation of Kanayama strops:

That's tough, you'd have loved it! I've never experienced leather like the Kanayama before. Jim posted

Kanayama strops are available from other vendors. Kanayama strops that Jim was not selling were and are
marketed under many of the Kanayama embossed names at the top of the strops usually in the gold lettering like Zebra, Lion, Mammoth, Ladybug, Everest, Derby, Special Quality Lions, and the Llama's we are familiar with
plus others,
and I have seen some with a different numbering system to indicate the series. Number 3's, etc. Perhaps some of these vendors and/or new vendors will be adding to their existing lines from Kanayama.
