    Default Make a strop?

    Hello all,

Does anybody know where I can but strips of hide/leather at 3" wide for making my own strop. Also, where can I but a suitable canvas so that I can make it double sided. I saw a post here some time ago with a link to somewhere that sold hide strips but I can't find it now

    Thanks in advance

    Pete

Check with tanneries in your area. Also, leather makers at times have scraps they will sell you or give you. Often, though, for one strop it's cheaper just to buy one.

I bought my leather from here. I am no expert in crafting leather but it seems like decent quality stuff to me.

What you want is to inspect the leather personally before you buy it. Soft supple and most of all, defect free. No wrinkle, no scars, no imperfections of any kind on the stropping surface.

Ditto nun2sharp. Find a tannery that's local to you and inspect the leather before you buy it. I wish I could help you with advice on canvas, but that has been a bugbear for me too.
Making a strop is not hard to do at all.

    Thanks fella's,

Good info and insight as usual. The issue with this is not the cost though. I have a strop that I bought and I'm happy with it. I just fancy having a go at making one myself. With that in mind, what are the swivelling things called on the end of a strop? I've searched under a few things like "swivel "D" rings" and such like but haven't had any success so far. And again, if anybody has any advice on the correct canvass and where to buy it, that would be great

    Thanks

    check Ebay UK
    eBay My World - thewiskeredbat
    eBay My World - leatherworld
I've had leather from both and its been pretty decent.

There is a good range of hardware from
    eBay My World - lyndashorsewear
but it IIRC only goes up to 50mm (2") so you'd have to taper the ends, but that's no big deal.

It's worth it if you want the challenge of making your own, but I don't think you can save money doing so.

I know you can save money by doing so! And it isn't that great a challenge.
