Thanked: 0Strop Width?
I am looking to get a strop that is good for beginners from amazon, simply I'm asking so I don't wind up with a piece of junk from amazon. Does anybody have any recommendations? Also I have a 3 inch long blade and I've seen a lot of 2inch wide strops, does that matter much? or would I need to buy a wider strop?

In my honest opinion, here's the best beginner strop money can buy: Amazon.com: Fromm Razor Strop 2 1/2" X 23" W/HDL Russia: Health & Personal Care
And the good news is that the Illinois #827, when well broken in still holds is own compared to way more expensive strops.

Thanked: 19You can strop any razor with strops of any width (well... almost).
If your strop is narrower than your blades you'll simply do X-stokes, as you may have already learned on this forum.
Some people argue that it is better to start with a narrower strop so you actually learn the X-pattern stroke.
Some others argue that it's better to start with a wider strop so you learn a 'simpler' stroke and focus on pressure, angle, etc.
If you're on a budget, you could still buy one outside amazon:
the tony miller poor man strop or the RupRazor Filly strop are two example that I can cite on top of my head, among other sellers/products, I'm sure.

make your own strop. the best thing to go and much cheaper.
Buy a good piece of lather. or a big peace of it so you can make more
Oly thing you need more is a stanley knive, 4 grommets and rope.
have fun
