I'm fairly new to shaving but not new to stropping. Id suggest that you trim the nicks out of your existing strop and continue using it until your technique improves to the point of not nicking it...otherwise you will just damage your new strop.

Making a padle strop is not too difficult if you are handy (and not too picky). They can be nice also...it's really a matter of preference.

I'd stick with the cheap hanging strop for now, until you get your technique down. I have a hanging strop I purchased from this outfit Leather Hanging Strops
It's not a fancy one, but it does the job. For some reason I cringe when I think of plunking down $$ for a nice looking strop, it only takes one slice....someday when I have more disposable income I'll get one...

I've nicked the edge of mine several times and saved it with a callus stone or pumice stone.
