OK I know I'm going a little off the beaten path here, but…
today I caught a glimpse of the back of a mouse pad--a somewhat sturdy black foam rubber, perfectly smooth, soft, and similar to an ideally flat leather face. I wonder… do you guys think this would work as a strop?

    OK, you're crazy.

Flip your mouse pad over and try it. It won't hurt anything. Fabric side might work better, though.

Yeah, I was also looking at the fabric side--it's like a fine synthetic that has a 'grain', that might work too except for the thermal print logo (hard plastic ink).

Hey Crazy -- I forgot something ---- 'mouse pad'? Really? Maybe a valuable antique?

    I think it's crazy.

Wouldn't be tempted to try it.

I've heard a lot of alternative strops that sound just as strange to me...like newsprint, your arm, your wife's (or your friend's wife's, or your neighbor's wife's) flannel nightgown, wood, etc. Just thought I'd throw one more on the list.

Ok your crazy. Your mouse pad can't make the list of which you speak unless you actually try it. : )

Thanks for yr feedback. So far I haven't heard any theories about the material, as to why this would or wouldn't strop… so I think I'll try it. Worst that could happen is it doesn't work great. If someone else out there wants to try it too, or has worked with other synthetic materials, let me know what results you get / have gotten.
