Hemp will work, linen is a product of flax, hemp is a product from...wait for it...the hemp plant! I'll bet your not the first to use hemp as a fabric strop, it was widly used for rope, textiles etc back in the day.
I dream of a world where a chicken can cross a road without having it's motives questioned.

I have used that hemp webbing on 2 separate strops. . It will work but needs to be broken in first. It is not a fine linen weave but noticeably coarser.

thanks guys.i actual just decided to contact a strop maker and purchase from them. That was easier than trying to find something and now I know what I am getting. So far the strop restoration is going pretty well. The hardware is actually fine. I just think i will let my dad clean it up and perhaps remove the rust and maybe refinish it, or take it to work and lightly sand blast it if he feels it will hold up.The leather has been cleaned with saddle soap 3 times now. still drawing out a bit of grim and old oil but not as much. It is starting to smooth out and the waves are dissappearing. I plan to do 1 more soaping/scrubbing and dry flat. Then I will start sanding out the scratches made my the tips of knives my dad was stropping over the years. he told me he used to use honing oil when doing so, so that is why i think so much grime is coming out during soaping.

Don't bother removing the scratches unless they interfere with stropping. You could get the strop to thin. Regarding the oil...put an absorbent material on both the top and bottom and then put weights on top. A "sandwich" of board, material, leather, material, board, weights. They let that sit for 3 days then check. Repeat if necessary. It sounds like it is oil saturated.

    Just an idea,

i use a nice trook keeper strap for this. Link

It is available in a variety of widths, depending on the width of yours strop.

You may want to look here for some ideas: http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...-supplies.html

Often suitable materials are marketed for other applications. It's a matter of being creative and searching for them.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
