Thanked: 3228It just keeps getting better and better. You are such a tease. If you hear a noise that is me whimpering in the corner. I think you had better buy a lottery ticket with luck like that.

Thanked: 247Amazing paddle strop 1897
I am guessing that those were made very specially for someone very special. There almost certainly is a good story behind these pieces...think about the periods that they survived (wars, depression, etc)
I hope someone has the whole story...those incredibly expensive items might be priceless?

I know that you guys frown upon adult language around here but that is farcking awesome.
That whole set is the most ornate thing i have ever seen. Imagine the cost back in 1900.
It was probably like 15.00 for all of it. Appx 2 weeks wages for common folk or something.

Thanked: 3228I did a quick check and found a site that said the average work week in the USA was 59 hours in 1897 and the average yearly wage was $411.00 or slightly less than $8.00 a week. Yea, somebody would have to put in a lot of grunt to pay the freight on that lovely shave kit. Mind boggling really.

Thanked: 3228Unit
Exactly my point in posting the average wage back then. Totally agree that it was a person from the privileged class that was likely the original owner. The up side is that, without the privileged class the craftsmen that made these would not have been able to show off what extreme talent they had. Nor would we be able, over 100 years later, to be still awed by their talent.
