Cool idea for newspaper/ travel strop. I did indeed used newspaper before with some success, and found this.

I have always just folded it along the Longest edge then looped it over any handle or towel rack held the two loose ends in between my Thumb and Fingers and I have a "Make Do" strop

The back of a leather wallet also makes for a handy travel strop

I have used it just taped to a table and folded over the side. I have read about people using old telephone directories and pulling the pages out once used, too. The old greasy newsprint that used to come off all over your hands when a paper was 'hot of the press' isn't the same anymore, alas - a lot have gone over to water-based inkjet technology.
