Thanked: 12Paper stropping - WOW
As I was doing more straight razor research (during work of course) I was focusing on paper stropping. I have read a lot of posts in regards to paper stropping. There was a thread over on Bladeforums that really got my attention. the use of phone books and clay coated pictures. I will post a link to that thread if a moderator says it is okay.
I came home and got my stropping equipment out and ready for a test run. I started with 20 passes on the phone book and then went to today's mail. Bed Bath and Beyond's color flyer was the ticket.
After ~100 passes the edge on my razor was darn near passing the HHT. I would have to move the hair on the blade and then it would split. I must say that I am quite happy. I can practice on paper until I feel good and comfortable enough to pay for an SRD setup.

I've not heard about the 'clay pictures' part, but I've stropped a fair amount on paper with good results. Its not going to improve an excellent edge, but greatly improves a worn edge. I prefer it to a pasted strop, 'cause if you back the newsprint w/ a hard flat smooth surface like stone, plate glass, etc, it doesn't curve and shorten the bevel. Coming off the newsprint (70 strokes), its rather harsh. Maybe that's what this 'Clap Pictures' process addresses. I normally went from the newsprint to 100 linen, 200 leather. 'Kept edges going for the humble budget members for quite some time.
