Thanked: 1Opinion on this strop
Hey guys if you read my first post I'm just starting out and have an amazon giftcard I want to use and I'm in need of a strop. So this is the only 3" strop on amazon that's not pushing $100. Do you guys think its worth a shot? Any input is appreciated. If you guys think its junk I'm getting the 2.5" Fromm strop but I really want a 3".

You can get an actual 3" strop from starshaving.com for not much more than that.

Fiveostang,
That strop looks more like the Dovo 1 1/4" strop. It's not much. You'll do much better with any of the Illinois brand strops, or try Straight Razor Designs for a wide selection of quality strops.

Cannot go wrong with any of the SRD or the Illinois.
West coast Shaving has the Illinois #827 in stock $37.99 Great strop that won't break the bank or make you cry if you nick it.
Here is a link if you would like to look Illinois Razor Strop #827It is just Whisker Whacking
Relax and Enjoy!

Thanked: 1184Or you could consider buying some leather and making your own. Lots of things to consider if you go this way though. First thing would be communication with the seller. You want something smooooth.
The other opinions I share also but i'm not sure they sell on Amazon ?Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

I started out with the 3" laptop strop from StarShaving for around $14. Great quality & small enough (10" working length) to use for travel or repurpose w/ paste if you move on to hanging strops.
I know you'd rather use the gift card, but you won't get the best bang for the buck with a strop from Amazon. Maybe you could use the gift card for basic supplies (eg camellia or mineral oil for your blade, etc) & some highly quality shave soap/cream & preshave cream or oil to try. Great skin prep/lather is often underrated, but it's as important as your strop to getting a good shave in my opinion. Check of the shaving forums (instead of Amz reviews) for more informed reviews about products before you buy if they are new to you.Last edited by hope; 05-12-2013 at 07:47 AM.

The strip you posted is a good deal but far from what you are looking for.
Go with the Fromm/ Illinois strop (they are the same company) they are quality American made strops. It will serve you well for a very long time.

Thanked: 1I did buy the Fromm on amazon it didn't cost me a penny and I got next day delivery. If it doesn't work out ill just go spend actual money and buy a Latigo. The only thing I'm nervous about is the X stropping but I've already gotten much more comfortable with the razor in my hand so I hope it's not to bad. Do any of you guys have any tips for X stropping?

Just take it slow and easy and you should be fine.
You can make a hanging newspaper strop to practice on first if you want. Just take a page of newspaper fold it along long section into a 2.5 in strop. Then fold it over a towel rail and secure both ends together with a paper clamp.
