would this strop be ok for razors??

I found this paddle strop at lee valley. Now it says it can be used for any sharp "tool" but could I use it for a razor? Also curious about the paste that comes with?? Have a look at the link if you wouldn't mind. And let me know your thoughts... I must say I like the idea of just running down the street and buying this rather then ordering online..

I am a little nervouse telling you it is usable. Without seeing it I could not tell you for sure. All you really need is a peice of smooth leather. Go check it out and if the leather is smooth and does not have ridges you could try it and shave with it. If it has ridges on it I would go with a vendor that has known good products. If the shave is horrible afterwards I would take it back and order a known good product. Good luck-Stoney

Did a little research of the compound on Lee Valley tools website and this is what it said: "It is a blend of both chromium and aluminum oxide. The average size of scratch pattern it leaves behind is 0.5 microns or .00002 inches"
I would think the paddle strop would work & the compound, but I would get the double sided paddle strop, one for the compound and the other to leave clean, JMO

I have the double sided strop from Lee Valley...I use the one side for paste and the other is clean leather...it's the strop I use after honing and works just fine

You would probably want a larger surface if it's going to be your everyday strop, but then again I stropped on a Dovo travel strop for a couple years before I bought my larger hanging strops

Just bear in mind 'average size' means both big & small scratches can occur. I can tell you from experience I would never use the Veritas green on a razor. It left scratches visible to the naked eye on a sword I was polishing. I think it is more suited to chisels.

hey hey.. Thanks guys! I have a hanging strop I use for my every day. I just want this for maintaining with the paste mainly. I'm also thinking I'm going to buy their 4000/8000 norton stones. I'm just wanting to get enough to maintain the edge on my razors that are just back from honing..

From reading that I would not use it on razors, or you could just listen to what Oz just posted

Well I'm going to pick up up the double sided paddle strop and the 4000/8000 norton tomorrow. But I'll buy a good paste made for razors online. Man! I love the advice on here! Wish I knew about this place before I got into straight razors.. Would have saved me a lot of money and frustration.
