Thanked: 375Made a strop
Made this strop up yesterday. It's a brown veg tanned 2" 8-9oz. and felt. My cuts are ruff but everything came together good enough for my first one. I have a vintage strop I based the length and width on (Overall length is 23" stropping area approx. 18"). Works good and I'm much happier with this than my 3" strop.
I tied the leather and felt in together, never seen this before with a strop but thought it sure would be easier to hold one D-ring.

Nice work, it feels good to make your own stuff. Do you get good tension on the leather and the felt with them joined together?

Thanked: 375Thanks, and it actually seems to work out fine. The felt is a tad long but I suspect that the leather could stretch out after some more use. I'm happier with this setup than my 2.5'' and 3" and I don't have to fumble with a second strap.
Just strop on the felt and flip it over to the leather, no fussing with a second handle to hold too. Also I think since its 2" wide it forces you to do an X stroke, which may carry over to my honing, not a horrible thing.CHRIS

I made my strop, and am pretty pleased with it too, though I haven't had a shop bought one to compare it to. Found the handsanding enjoyable but it took a lot longer than expected.

Thanked: 375Well it sounds like you put a lot more effort into your's, I didn't even sand mine that sounds like a PITA
Started working on a paddle strop today, 12" long with a 4 1/2" handle I spun on my lathe. I'm spray painting the sides of the paddle and the handle, now I'm waiting for the paint to dry.....Last edited by Trimmy72; 06-10-2013 at 09:46 PM.
