    Default Raw Silk for Strop??

I have a Wester Bros pigskin strop, which I think is pretty cool. There's only the leather strop itself; the back side (for sharpening, I was told) is puckered (same effect as hammered steel). This seems to be keeping my razor sharp. I've read a lot about the positive effects of linen/cotton/silk/polyester and have been looking at some raw silk fabric, heavy sail canvas - or maybe linen (like the piece pictured), thinking I can fashion a fabric strop to supplement the leather. I know it's not necessary but does it sound like a bad idea? What say ye?

Making your own equipment is a great idea. The Making a linen strop out of denim wiki entry is a part of the Do It Yourself Equipment category.

I don't know what material would be best but if you can't get that type of webbing the above article will help. You could also look for a replacement strop component that is to your liking.

That article is perfect! I think I'll get the sailcloth. It's 2-ply and seems to be pretty heavy. It's cheap enough by the yard where I can get a yard and replace the strip a few times (though that shouldn't be necessary). Thanks for your response.

Should work ok. Give it a try & tell us.
I've got a strip of artist canvas loaded with Dovo white that seems to work.

Thanks, I will. Ordered it tonight, along with some hardware to pretty this thing up and give the ability to hang it anywhere.
