Homemade Pasted Bench Strop
I made a bench strop yesterday out of scraps and so far I'm happy with it. I'm a newbie though so I wouldn't know the difference. It is a walnut base with 5/8" redwood for the top. I know balsa is the wood of choice but I have this nice quarter sawn redwood laying around and figured it was soft enough to use for this purpose. It was simply glued to the base with indexing pins to keep it located, lapped with 150 on glass and then a thin layer of crox applied. Rubber feet will be added today.
Has anyone used anything other than balsa for pasted strops?

Thanked: 2027Very nice Job,My only concern would be,redwood has pretty High silica content which can be very abrasive on its own.
Guess you will have to see how it works.

Thanks for the reply, that might work in my favor at this point as I don't have a finishing stone. I am using this after coming off the Norton 8k. My thaught was it might be a kind of poor mans finishing "stone".

You could always put some leather on it and put the paste on that.
